Many states such as North Carolina require that you do what is known as a waiting week before their unemployment benefits will begin. It is a common myth that you must wait to file for a week after you become unemployed. This is untrue and in fact your waiting week that must be accomplished isn’t begun until you’ve filed for your benefits so if you wait a week prior to filing, you have not accomplished a waiting week, but must wait another week prior to having checks sent to you.
